about

I think this will be my last song about Franche-Comté - at least until we go back next time.

This is a recurring theme for me.

I'm fascinated by the strong feelings I get of the extended history of the immediate area when I'm walking on the isolated trails of the forests of Franche-Comté in the east of France. Who built that house/chapel/bridge? What were they like? Who else has walked the trail I'm on? Why? Who built the 18th century house we are staying in? What are their stories?

The colours refer to the seasons of the forest on the banks of the Doubs river where we do a lot of walking. It would be great to spend a year and see the seasons some time (although winter might be a tad chilly!).

Cette chanson est dédiée à nos amis Brigitte, Marc, Karine, Bertrand, Joëlle, Jean-Francois, Armelle, Apolline et Laurentin.
Merci encore pour tout!

lyrics

Who Walked These Ancient Trails?
©2016 Neil Porter

I want to see the picture that you painted - valley red and gold
I want to turn the pages of the stories in the stones

I hear the voices of the people who have walked these paths before
I heard some stories and I want to hear a whole lot more

I’m going where the sun goes down
Go where the south wind blows
Big river calling me
Shake this shadow off my soul

During the countdown
In my mind I’m wondering
Who walked these ancient trails?
I’m missing your town
Something deep inside of me
Something there is calling me

INSTR

I’m going where the sun goes down
Go where the south wind blows
Big river calling me
Shake this shadow off my soul

Maybe I’ll see you again - through green and white and red and gold
We’ll share a drink or two - I’ll hear your tales unfold

We’ll walk together - and every step you’ll show me more
But until that time comes - I’ll dream just like before

I’m going where the sun goes down
Go where the south wind blows
Big river calling me
Shake this shadow off my soul

During the countdown
In my mind I’m wondering
Who walked these ancient trails?
I’m missing your town
Something deep inside of me
Something there is calling me
