about

This was based on some reading I was doing on homelessness. It surprised me to read that in Australia, 70 people "go missing" every day for various reasons - most come home within a week or so - 300 or so each year are never "found". Some leave because of mental illness, some as a result of domestic violence, some because of financial reasons, and some who just don't like their life at the time. I wondered just how a person might "disappear" - which is where the words came from.

The vocals were recorded using both my Rode mics - the M1 and the NT3 - hoping to get a nice mix between the nice roundness of the M1 with the crispness of the NT3. Drums are midi - based on a few midi loops and then "micro-managed" to suit the song.

The amazing lead guitar track was provided by Fran Dagostino (some may know him as "ziti") - to be honest, it left me totally stunned when he sent me a video of him playing this track with my backing tracks. Fran is an amazing blues musician, and you really should get over to his page at MacJams: www.macjams.com/artist/ziti

lyrics

The Wrong Way Home
©2010 Neil Porter

Kissed your wife and kids this morning
Headed down the track
You love them but you leave them
You just don’t come back
You take a different turn this time
Don’t know why
Just take the wrong way home

Office running smoothly
Nothing out of whack
Nothing out of order
You just don’t come back
You take a different turn this time
Don’t know why
Just take the wrong way home

Just walk out, nobody’s looking
Out the door into the street
Get on any bus
And take a seat
Might end up in a lane somewhere
Working on some scheme
Might take that desert island
Some medicated dream
Take the long way home

No-one’s going to miss you
You’re no leader of the pack
Disappear without a suitcase
You just don’t come back
You take a different turn this time
Don’t know why
Just take the wrong way home

Three score and ten go missing every day
Taking the wrong track
You love them but you leave them
You just don’t come back
You take a different turn this time
Don’t know why
Just take the wrong way home

Just walk out, nobody’s looking
Out the door into the street
Get on any bus
And take a seat
Might end up in a lane somewhere
Working on some scheme
Might make that desert island
Some medicated dream
Take the wrong way home
