about

These tracks arrived out of the blue yesterday from a post-Marastique bandmate. I had no idea that these recordings were even made, never mind that they still existed.
The band (R-L in the photo) are: Neil Porter (bass), Gruz Hilzinger (flute, vocals, percussion and snat), Gary Fredericks (guitar and vocals), Ian Robbins (guitar and vocals) and Graham Butchardt (percussion, guitar, vocals and more snat).
We played on the northern Sydney beaches for a couple of years in this formation, and attracted a following on the "beach circuit".
These tracks were recorded at Mona Vale Memorial Hall on Sunday July 2nd 1972 at a concert we did with the legendary Tamam Shud. Later (on August 25 1972) we supported The Shud on the "End Concert" - the end of "Shud Phase 1".
The recording was probably done on a single mic into a pretty basic tape recorder, then dubbed onto cassette, and the sound quality is "less than hi-fi"! What stands out for me is the joy in the hall (admittedly, partly herbal based), the boys ability to grab harmonies out of mid-air, and the fun we had. My first rehearsal with the others blew me away - tight harmonies and a perfect instrumental combination.
This collection includes originals and covers.
So, it's of historical significance to anyone who was in the band and perhaps anyone who was at one of our concerts at the time (if they can remember). Anyone who knows our recent individual musical outputs may also find this interesting in a "so that's where he started out" sort of way.
