about
Joe wrote this back in 1982 in response to a media storm erupting around the "tragic and unfortunate" private life and fall from grace of a then, popular entertainer.
It's often called "Tall Poppy Syndrome" in Australia, but it's really just about making media misery money.
Step forward in time and very little has changed.
Big thanks to Neil for resurrecting the song and for kicking it up with Mike to 2022.
lyrics
Isn’t it a shame, the girl’s so talented
People say the cruelest things without thinking
And if she stops to catch her breath, she gets accused
Too soon, too much, that boat is sinking
Is it any wonder why our idols crack and break
As if, for you and I, mistakes are something others make
Don’t look down, kid, we haven’t finished with you yet
Another round kid, we’ll take as much as we can get
Isn't it a shame, a moth to a flame
A spark to a fuse
Isn’t it a crime! Star burns out before her time
Exclusive on tonight’s news
Add another coat of varnish, catch her when she falls
As long as you can see it clearly right back in the peanut stalls.
Don’t look down, kid, we haven’t finished with you yet
Down to the ground kid, we’ll take as much as we can get
From what I’ve heard about it,
Some people can’t do without it
Dirty water looks like wine
Sign on the dotted line
Isn’t it a crime, the fears we hide behind
Our addictions and greed
Isn’t it time to stop the blind leading the blind
Will we ever satisfy that need?
Put another rumor round,
Tumbling down like dominoes
Isn’t it an education watching how the rumor grows
Don’t look down, kid, we haven’t finished with you yet
Another round kid, we’ll take as much as we can
Don’t look down, kid, we haven’t finished with you yet
Burned to the ground kid, we’ll take as much as we can
Don’t look down, don’t look down
